Chakrabongse Dining
Best for: Old-school glamour
One of the Chao Phraya River’s most beautiful old family mansions dates back to 1908, when it was commissioned by HRH Prince Chakrabongse. Today, it stands as a perfectly restored boutique hotel, as well as a charming riverside restaurant serving classic royal Thai cuisine. The set menu rotates daily and incorporates classics from Thai pomelo salad to crabmeat curries to river prawns in tamarind sauce. Whether in the dining room or on the terrace, the setting is breathtaking.
Trader Vic’s
Best for: Riverside seclusion
Known for its Mai Tai cocktails and Pacific Rim cuisine, the Polynesian-inspired Trader Vic’s also has a good selection of grilled meats and fish, plus foie gras and French oysters. A stunning view of the river is a bonus, as are the signature dishes of Ahi Poke, raw tuna with avocado, soy-chili dressing, taro chips and barbecued spareribs. The Sunday brunch is a great way to feel on vacation without leaving Bangkok.
Riverside Grill
Best for: Steaks
This lounge bar and grill is an easy-to-love hit thanks to the enormous Banyan tree which shades the cabana-like bar as well as picturesque, unobstructed river views. The food doesn't try anything too challenging—simple but well-executed Thai and Western grill dishes—but delivers wth quality ingredients, whether its the Aussie wagyu beef ribeye or local favorites like grilled chicken and barbecue pork skewers. To drink, go for something fruity, feel-good and with a local slant, like the Mangkut Drowning (Barbados dark rum with mangosteen puree).
Ciao Terrazza
Best for: Italian classics
Italian cuisine courtesy of one of Bangkok's most lauded chefs, a riverside alfresco terrace and the Mandarin Oriental's iconic Author's Lounge in the background make this one of the Chao Phraya River's most easy-to-recommend spots. It's more casual than the other restaurants at Bangkok's oldest, most formal hotel (though they'll still shoo you away if you turn up in shorts), dishing out Italian staples like pappardelle with tender Ferrara-style spare rib stew as well as wood-fired pizzas.
The Summer House Project
Best for: Designer setting
Starchitect Duangrit Bunnag followed up Never Ending Summer with this Euro bistro with a vast terrace that leads right up to the water. Comfort food like Fisherman’s Stew, crab cakes and beer-battered fish and chips go down as easily as bar manager Dheeradon Dissara's Thai-infused cocktails. Cosy up to your date on one of the outdoor sofas as you sip on a glass of Gold Gold Gold (prosecco, mango puree and gold leaves) or Pina Pamila (Malibu, rum and palm juice).
Peppina (Tha Maharaj)
Best for: Pizza
Branches of this next-level Neapolitan pizzeria have mushroomed all over town, but this one without doubt boasts the most romatic location, right beside the river in Bangkok’s Old Town. Chef Paolo Vitaletti's pizzeria is hailed as Bangkok’s most authentic purveyor of pizzas thanks to official certification from the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana in Naples. The restaurant does a lot more than just pizza, though, and is just as suited to a multi-course feast of pastas, sharing steaks and wine.
Osha Cafe
Best for: Modern Thai
Comfortably the chicest place to dine at the Asiatique riverside community mall comes from the same team as Thai fine-dining restaurant Osha. Here though things are a little more laidback, with a space that blends contemporary design quirks with an easygoing attitude. The Thai dishes might sound familiar, but the food here is anything but plain, whether it’s a beautifully presented pad Thai or rich and decadent massaman curry.
