Every year, Thai artists and advertising agencies win awards at Cannes Lions and prove that Thai commercials can be some of the most creative in the business. But we know what really sells products: cancer, deafness, blindness and making your customers weep uncontrollably! Here are nine times when Bangkok TV commercials did just that.

1. When True Move H used poor people and terminal illness to make you sign up for a phone contract.

Sometimes when you pay it forward, it goes a long way.

2. When Mantana Land & House tried to tell you that if you don't appreciate your parents... they'll go blind?!

3. When 7-Eleven made sure you'll never forget your teachers... BY KILLING ONE OFF.

4. When Pantene used deafness and Pachelbel's Canon in D Major to make you follow your dreams. And buy shampoo.

And then there is Thai Life Insurance Company (TLIC), who really know how to get those tear ducts flowing.

5. Like when they used a deaf father and a dying child.

HOLD ME BACK. HOLD ME BACK.

6. ...I mean, gosh you didn't have to kill him off!

7. And when they used the kid from Up as a street cleaner who loves his mom.

8. And when they told you never to ignore that busker kid you see strumming away... no matter how bad he sounds.

WHY?! THAI INSURANCE COMPANY. WHY?!

9. And the worst of all: When they made you question your entire existence.

Why was I born? I was born to.... CRY!

So, what do you think of these commercials: are they mini-epics that deserve international praise or do they simply prey on our worst fears?
