A BTS Skytrain redevelopment project made from bamboo claims to be the answer to Bangkok's sustainable transport needs.

Designed by Jon Sealey, of London's Marques and Jordy design firm, The Bangkok Skyride proposes to use the unused space under the BTS rail for elevated cycling lanes.

Similar proposals from the firm have been kicking around for several years now, but Sealey has recently turned to a self-supporting structure made of bamboo as a way to make the 55km project "easier, cheaper and quicker to build, and even more culturally relevant."

Taking inspiration from traditional Thai baskets, the design would be the first large-scale infrastructure project built from bamboo.

According to Sealey, the project be built off-site in 8-meter modules, and delivered by truck to locations along Sukhumvit Road and then craned into position with minimal disruption to traffic.

The design has potential for LED advertising boards, while there are also plans for an accompanying cycle app that encourages cyclists to ride together and gain points to be redeemed at local vendors.

Sealey claims that utilizing the disused space under the existing BTS Skytrain would free up space at road level for dedicated bus and motorbike lanes.

Sounds pretty amazing? Don't get too excited just yet—the project is currently seeking investors in order to build a full-scale mock-up that can be tested.

For now, we can dream. Check out some of the renderings below:
