BANGKOK BAR

Monde

A garden-like sheesha-friendly atmosphere along with live bands.

The buzz: New Japanese village-style community mall Taka Town (Sukhumvit Soi 39, opposite pet-friendly garden Ozono) is the setting for this new rooftop bar. Set on the fifth floor of the mall, Monde boasts a garden-like sheesha-friendly atmosphere along with live bands.

The décor: The wide space is covered with fake grass, plenty of pleather sofas and big cushions that encourage chilling with a large group of friends. On a deck at one end, the bar and sheesha booth offer more lounge-friendly Moroccan-style seating.

The music: Two live bands play Thai and international covers every Fri-Sat along with DJs spinning a bit of electro and billboard hits.

The crowd: A blend of students from international programs and first jobbers who you can expect to see at Plan B (the former Safe House) or Whip for an after party.

The menu: Signature cocktails are concocted by an in-house mixologist who worked in Thonglor bars like Bottoms Up. Standard cocktails start from B250-280 but their signature ones pack quite the punch, like the Four Seasons (four shots containing chocolate and Jameson, gin and orange juice, vodka pear and tequila/rum and blue caracao, B750) and the easy-going KG (peach schnapps, rum, gin and Ballentines, B280). You can order all kinds of flavors of sheesha like Sweet Tonight (grape, strawberry, bubble gum and mint, B500) or Unicorn Pop (strawberry, bubble gum, peach and grape, B500). You can even ask for an additional vodka shot, milk or iced water in the pot as well. There are also the customized options ranging from B500-1,290, which allow you to craft your own sheesha recipe and have it served on your next visit. Singha (B140/pint) and Asahi (B160/ pint) are the two choices on tap, with more drops soon to follow starting with Weihenstephaner. The bar food covers serious mains to gab glaem (Thai snacks): pad thai (B160), stir-fried chicken and cashew nuts (B220), Japanese-fusion dishes like the “sexy roll” (salmon roll with special sauce, B240), Italian pizza (from B300) and pasta (from B280).

Why you’ll come back: It’s off Thonglor, making it a bit more laidback for a weekend night out than some of the similar options on the main party drag.
