BANGKOK VENUE

Black Beer'd

A super-tiny, super-cool craft beer bar in Thonglor.

The buzz: This new addition to the arty 9:53 Community Mall is the brother bar of fellow beer specialist White Beer’D at Crystal Design Center, and offers a narrower, more specific selection of craft beers in an intimate setting.

The decor: The tiny black box-like interior mixes black-coated steel with wooden furniture. Naturally, there's also a bunch of vintage bulbs and beer-loving quotes strewn about the place. Pull up a bar stool to talk with the with bartender, or grab a beer and head to the outdoor terrace (where you can actually order from other bars in the mall, too). Bonus: there's a free pool table.

The music: The indie/electro pop soundtrack that covers the entire community mall is on point: think Tame Impala, Broken Bells or Breakbot.

The crowd: The city's growing craft beer heads looking for somewhere more intimate to imbibe.

The drinks: We particularly like that the place sticks to what it knows; that means only nine craft beers on tap, though this rotates almost every week. When we dropped by, stout seemed to be the order of the day, with options like Stochholm's Omnipollo Hypnopompa Imperial Stout (B380/pint) and Utah's Epic Imperial Stout (B280), but they say this won't always be the case. Other options on our visit included De Molen Mooi & Meedogenloos Belgian Strong Ale (B270) and Praiire Artisan Saison (B310). You can also can try the first keg in Bangkok of Australian craft brewery Holgate's Dunkel Weizenbock (B220), and chances are they'll be hosting a meet-the-brewer event in the near future. Keep an eye on their Facebook page.

The food: Burgers and grill with choices of beef and pork. Try the beef burger in a brioche bun with beer sauce (B280, pork is B250). Pork loin (B250), grilled Australian rib eye (B480) and Thai-style salmon zaab (B220) are the (relatively) carb-free options. The owner told us his original plan was to open a milkshake bar but beer won out in the end. Still, there's a few excellent choices, from the alcohol-free Even More Peanut (B180), a mix of vanilla ice-cream, salted caramel and peanut butter, to boozy Bourbon Vanilla (B220).
