Loei’s largest and most vibrant festival, Peetakhon, takes place from Jun 22-24 in Dan Sai District. Locals will dress up in colorful attire, donning masks made from rice husks and bamboo shoots, to represent the hundreds of ghosts believed to have accompanied Phra Vessandorn, an avatar of Lord Buddha, on his return to town (from his presumed death). They’ll take part in a procession to and from Phonechai Temple, the most revered in town. We recommend staying at Phunacome Resort (www.phunacomeresort.com). More information at TAT Loei, 042-812-812.
