Aman Resorts founder Adrian Zecha just opened a new hotel in Luang Prabang. (The 84-year-old left Aman Resorts after acrimonious court battles in 2014-2016.)

Set in a 1914 colonial building built by the French, the very simple lines of Azerai Luang Prabang's 53 rooms are simply elegant, if a far cry from Aman opulence. At US$250 (B8,700) a night, versus US$610 for the nearby Amantaka, so are the room rates.

Zecha promises more hotels under the Azerai brand, which he says is geared towards “experienced urbane individuals, looking for distinction, quality and comfort at affordable prices.” www.azerai.com/luang-prabang
