Why is it that mall restaurants don’t try very hard? Is it the high rent and massive foot traffic that makes food rank pretty low on their owners’ list of priorities? What’s certain is that Kuu would never survive in Sukhumvit Soi 24/1 (that tiny alley by the mouth of Soi 26) or small Japanese mall Nihonmachi, which happens to be a 30-second walk away and packed with awesome Japanese restaurants. So while Kuu isn’t terrible, you’d have to be pretty addicted to K Village to eat here.
Kuu has come a long way from its sterile first location at Central World. Their new location at K. Village is a much livelier hangout spot combining elements of the traditional izakaya with the contemporary décor more in line with the popular community mall. There’s a semi-open kitchen and lots of wooden tables, and the menu has some serious dishes like steak, ton katsu ramen, grilled skewers and sushi. There’s even an outdoor section.
The buzz: Newspaper heir Dan Hetrakul chose to eschew the hustle and bustle of the usual party districts to open Grease, a swanky all-in-one nightspot, on the quieter Sukhumvit Soi 49. Occupying a four-story shophouse, this newly-opened venue houses a bar, club, lounge and restaurant, aiming to cater to all sorts of late-night pursuits.
The buzz: Located next to the lobby of the newly-opened Ashton Condominium in Sukhumvit Soi 38, The Bookshop is the brainchild of Ashley Sutton, the man who brought you Iron Fairies, Fat Gut’z and Mr. Jones’ Orphanage. His buddy, mixologist Joseph Boroski, is doing the cocktails.
Located next to the lobby of the new Ashton Condominium in Sukhumvit Soi 38, The Bookshop is the latest brainchild of nightlife impresario Ashley Sutton, the man behind ever-popular Bangkok bars Iron Fairies and Fat Gut’z. With The Bookshop, Sutton delivers a characteristically playful and bizarre interior reminding us of Professor Dumbledore’s library with a drinks menu by mixologist Joseph Boroski to match. Try the Edgar Allen Poe which contains vodka, fresh citrus, palm sugar and pink grapefruit. The food menu is yet to be fully unveiled but dishes include salmon tartar in waffle cones with spicy jelly and African chicken skewers with grilled pineapple and tortilla chips.

The buzz: Burger Factory’s former chef, Krisda Chintakananda, has run off and started anew with his very own place at Rainhill, a community mall at the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 49. The menu has grown beyond his former joint’s burger obsession and now encompasses more sophisticated fare such as the peach and prosciutto salad with brie (B235). Nonetheless, Krisda insists his cuisine will remain resolutely rustic.
The former chef of one of Bangkok’s best gourmet burger joints recently moved over to Rainhill and this new bistro-style diner up on the second level. The décor follows an industrial chic setup with bare brick walls, steel painted black and lamps dangling from the ceiling—and gets extra points for the outdoor terrace overlooking Sukhumvit Road. The menu embraces comforting dishes like chicken wings and burgers but also offers more unique options like peach and prosciutto salad with brie or the “rustic quesadilla” with smoked salmon, mornay sauce and chive sour cream. They stock decent wines and a few American craft beers and also promise a special brunch menu soon.
The vibe: Q Bar has kept its eye on the little space behind their long-standing Sukhumvit Soi 11 club for quite some time. Formerly a print shop turned illegal gambling den, a police intervention finally liberated the place allowing the Q-team to move in with a bold plan to rip out the ceiling and set up a 19th century French boudoir. Pop in, order some oysters or cold cuts, have the bar staff pour you a Vieux Pontarlier through the absinthe fountain, and let the green fairy weave its magic.
Nightclub Q Bar Bangkok, one of the long-term players on the nightlife hub of Sukhumvit Soi 11, just opened a visually arresting new bar right next door. Set in a revamped abandoned space, Le Derriere is a luxuriously fitted-out art nouveau Francophile absinthe and wine bar, complete with velvet couches and dark-wooden lounge tables that offers both indoor and outdoor drinking. Beyond the bare-brick façade, the place has all the hallmarks of an exclusive den and the impressive drinks list features a French-heavy wine list, classic cocktails and a great range of different types of absinthe. They also offer a ladies night on Wednesdays and Sundays
