If you hadn’t already heard, Bangkok restaurants are killing it globally right now. This year’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants, held during an awards ceremony in Melbourne on Wednesday night, only proved it when two Bangkok restaurants not only made the list, but saw their rankings jump dramatically over 2016.

Gaggan, named the best restaurant in Asia for the third consecutive year back in February, saw a huge leap from the 23rd spot right up to no. 7. That’s the highest spot which any Bangkok restaurant has achieved since the awards were launched in 2002.

David Thompson’s Nahm, now headed in Bangkok by chef Prin Polsuk, also climbed in the rankings, from no. 37 in 2016 up to no. 28 this year—that’s just one spot below The Ledbury, one of London’s most-celebrated dining institutions.

This year also saw a new overall winner in New York City’s Eleven Madison Park, overtaking Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy.

Since 2002, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants has been awarding titles to exciting restaurants across the world, as voted by an international panel.

This year’s ceremony crowns a heightened period of restaurant award events both nationally and around the world.
