Bangkok's egg tart-loving dessert specialist Ka-Nom Bakery has whipped out an unexpected collaboration with American-Portuguese chef George Mendes, the man behind New York's Michelin-starred Aldea restaurant.

From today (May 15), chef Mendes' version of pastel de nata, the creamy, custardy, caramelized Portuguese egg tart, is available at Ka-Nom branches around Bangkok.

The limited-edition tart in question comes flavored with vanilla and sweet blueberry compote, and is served in packaging which resembles the boxes you find in Belem, the part of Lisbon where the tarts originated, and the blue and white colors emblematic of the old city. There's no word yet on how long it will be available.

A first-generation American born to Portuguese parents, chef Mendes grew up enjoying elaborate, festive meals, something which is reflected in his menu at Aldea, his Mediterranean restaurant in New York's Union Square which has held a Michelin star since 2011.

Here in Bangkok, Ka-Nom has been serving egg tarts since 1999, along with other pastry-style snacks.

Priced at B150 for two, the tarts are limited to 60 sets per day at each Ka-Nom branch and via Line: @kanomshop. See the full list of branches.
