BANGKOK RESTAURANT

Le Maverick Restaurant & Bar

Bistro-like venue with Mediterranean, French and Italian offerings with molecular tweaks.

This fancified bistro serves up everything Mediterranean, French and Italian with molecular touches, weekly tasting menus, plus a long drinks list. Grab a nicoise salad or, if the mood strikes, opt for something heartier like the Maverick sliders (three mini burgers: Tajima wagyu beef, kurobuta pork and chicken served with chunky potatoes).

The buzz: Located in the middle of Asoke, this bar-cum-restaurant aims to satisfy all your cravings, from pastries and lunch to molecular tapas and chef’s tables. The restaurant showcases the work of three main chefs flown in from France and Singapore, two of whom have some experience in Michelin-star restaurants.

The décor: With its interior by Soda, the dining room takes on a casual bar vibe thanks in part to its location inside an office building. However, Maverick is much simpler than Soda’s previous works, Maya and W Hotel. Wood and black steel dominate with big bookshelves displaying molecular gastronomy books to one side and a large open kitchen to the other. There’s also a good-looking bar with its view of a pretty inviting liquor cellar.

The food:  While you might go for the theatrical a la carte starters like of curry-flavored crab cannelloni with avocado espuma (B325) or the classical spinoff of truffled poularde de bresse (B695), you can also go all the way with 900g worth of cote de boeuf (B3,375). Other appealing deals include set menu (starting 3 courses at B995), which includes all of the aforementioned dishes. Make sure you don’t skip the artful desserts like the unconventionally well plated passion fruit tofu cheese cake (B230).

The drinks: The cocktails here also play around with the molecular concept. Expect foamy textures and spherification, as well as completely out-there flavors like the massaman cocktail. Their recommendations include the Maverickstini (gin, brandy, raspberry, liquor, B190) and Maverick Cocktail (vodka, triple sec, pineapple juice and Galliano, B210). Drop by Mon-Fri 6-8pm to take advantage of their buy-one-get-one-free deal on beers and cocktails. Wine lovers are also catered for with an impressive list of bottles (starting from B850) and a wine dispenser that offers more than 30 choices of wine by the glass. The brief list of beers includes Singha (B90), Beerlao (B120) and Erdinger (B160).

The crowds: Since the location is well-suited to office workers and expats, expect groups of executives feasting deep into the night.
