The buzz: Finding an average-quality steak is easy in Bangkok, but heading out for a prime cut of beef without having to rob a bank first is a real challenge. Opened two months ago on the second floor of the trendy Eight Thonglor building, the Hog’s Breath Café is an Australian-chain steakhouse that gives hope to more frugal meat lovers. No one would expect to find such down-home Aussie cooking in this modern hi-end mall.

The décor: Sport bar meets saloon-style counter with loud rock ‘n’ roll as backing. The wooden furniture has a vintage feel, and the collection of black & white pictures adds a little coziness. A terrace with a few tables is also available as an alfresco option.

The cuisine: Hog’s Breath is the place to go to get your meat fix. The star is the 18-hour slow cooked prime Australian rib steak, available in three sizes from 100-400 grams. A dozen different steak options come served with a choice of potatoes (try the curly fries), vegetables and sauces. The appetizers feature American snacks including chicken wings, onion rings or dusted calamari—you get all three in the finger food combo. If you don’t want steak, then opt for the Aussie burger or the (slightly) more healthy chicken Caesar salad. Desserts are equally decadent: the Mississippi mud cake comes with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and whipped cream.

The booze: They promise the short wine list will expand once the wine shop in the complex opens.

The crowd: Mostly a family venue, the Hog’s Breath is aimed at Thonglor residents but might well draw in a few homesick Aussies.
