BANGKOK RESTAURANT

Gastronom

The buzz: The sister restaurant of popular breakfast/brunch spot Gastro 1/6, Gastronom, is located at the very front of the Yunomori Onsen. It specializes in all-day breakfast before turning into a tapas bar when the sun goes down. Chef Duangporn “Bo” Songvisava branches out from her first love, Thai cuisine, to another of her favorites, tapas, while the desserts are prepared by her friend, Jidapa Niyomsrisakool.

The décor: Slightly industrial, with gray walls, a concrete floor and stainless steel chairs topped off with wood accents. There’s also outdoor seating in the form of canvas beds and bean bags that fit in with the lush spa surroundings.

The food: Many dishes are influenced by Chef Bo’s years spent in the kitchen at tapas bar Barrafina in London, while others take their cues from Australia and Spain. On top of the high quality, organic produce, you’ll also find artisanal products from the likes of Maison Jean Phillipe used in the bread served with aioli (B95) and Sloane’s in the grilled Sloane’s botifarra (Catalan sausages, B220). Start your meal with pinchos (snack-sized dishes) like chorizo with Manchego cheese and pickled onion (B70), seared quail with quince aioli (B220) and sautéed prawns with chili and garlic infused oil (B220) before moving onto the cold cut combo (jamon, chorizo, pickled and roasted olives, B850) or Iberico Jamon (B780 for 100g). Some dishes have slight Thai twists; for example, Chef Bo throws some coriander roots into her flavorful romesco sauce that accompanies either seared scallops (B320) or roasted pork belly (B320). Those who visit during the day can expect brunch-focused dishes like poached eggs with asparagus (B320). The desserts include treats like peanut butter and caramelized banana on toast (B95) and rich choc rocky road (B105).

The drinks: Vittoria coffee starts from B65 and juice from B120. Matched to your tapas there’s a selection of eight organic and biodynamic wines (both red and white), sourced from small wineries in Spain courtesy of distributor Fin Wine, starting from B220 by the glass/B1,600 by the bottle.

The crowds: Thirsty onsen customers clad in yukata and some beautiful acquaintances of the owners for now, while the owners expect to attract similar crowds as Gastro 1/6. Pieng-or Mongkolkumnuankhet
