Apichai “Lek” Trakulpadejkrai’s star is on the rise. Fresh from making his acting debut in Kongdej Jaturansaramee’s mind-bending P-047, and contributing to the soundtracks of both P-047 and Shambhala, the long-haired singer-songwriter better known as Greasy Café seems to have finally outgrown his cult status—based on his absolutely packed-out gig at Cosmic Café last week. Lek had the crowd singing along to every word of his brooding and emotionally dense hits like “Sing Lao Nee” and “Fuen.” We’re hoping for a few more shows before his third album arrives on Smallroom Records in Nov, though a bigger venue might be required. Meanwhile, the night’s opening act BeforeChamp seem like another band to watch with their intriguing spin on the whole sensitive ukulele crooner act, incorporating looped beat-boxing and electric violin that veers from the serene to the screeching. Get your alt fix at the next Outside-In Live session at Cosmic Café featuring acid jazz group Jarintanakai on Sep 8.
