After three years, Sukhumvit Soi 22 live music venue The Overground is calling it a day with two final parties this weekend (Jul 8 and 9).

In a statement posted on the bar's Facebook page, owner Grahame Lynch explains his decision: "Business is tough out there. Costs keep on rising, and income is not rising to match. The powers that be are actively hostile to the nightlife scene and probable imminent developments will make for an even more treacherous trading environment. We also have little visibility over the future status of our leased property which removes the incentive to invest for the long term. Most bars and clubs in BKK I talk to are down 30-50% in revenues."

Some of the acts to have graced The Overground's stage include nightlife legends A Guy Called Gerald, Francois K and Afrika Islam, plus regular appearances from locals Jenny and the Scallywags and Lynch's own electro band Wasabi Bytes. We'll also fondly remember Popscene's sold-out Blue Hawaii concert when it felt like the floor was going to give way.

This Friday will see the first of two closing parties, featuring DJs Nemo Cools and Rory Breaker-Morant. Saturday will feature DJ Billy V and a last performance at Overground from Wasabi Bytes featuring jnknslry.

Lynch says the Overground name will live on in the form of special events and festivals.
