1. It’s Run Time

Bangkok has seen an explosion of running events this past year—and now everyone is at it. Especially with winter on its way, you have no more excuses not to reunite with your running shoes and join the race. Highlights include Run with Friends (Dec 29, bit.ly/1RSHOla) and the Thailand International Half Marathon (Dec 13, www.thailandhalfmarathon.com). Beginners fear not, many of these events also comprise fun runs and mini-marathon (5km) distances—perfect for a healthy get-together with old and new friends alike.

2. The Markets are Cooler Than Ever

The air-con can’t compete with that cool winter breeze. It doesn’t stick around very long, so make the most of it by joining the cool crowds at some of the most happening new markets in town. This weekend there’s Container Market on Nov 28-29 at The Bloc Ratchapruek—ideal for tracking down unique fashion and accessories and meeting face-to-face with rising local designers. Next up is Area Five: Bangkok Art and Market Fair 2015 on Dec 4-6 and 11-13 at Airport Rail Link Makkasan where you can find local fashion brands, food trucks and live music from the likes of Desktop Error, The Jukks and Gene Kasidit. See more in our winter roundup

3. Out-of-Town Music Festivals

Yes, it’s time to pack your bags and flee Bangkok for a camping trip with a cultural twist. The year’s biggest and best music festivals are upon us.  First up is Stone Free Music Festival (Dec 11-13) in Saraburi, which is all about local indie acts, from big names like Desktop Error, Aire and Yellow Fang to new faces like Tug Suk, White Light and Morg. If you’re looking for a free-spirited getaway, there is Wonderfruit Festival (Dec 17-20) in Pattaya, offering international acts including Yasiin Bey, Jon Hopkins x Chris Levine and Goldroom, plus food, outdoor art installations, handicraft workshops and many more social activities.

4. Go Gallery-Hopping at Night

Bangkok’s contemporary art night of nights, Galleries' Night BKK, returns Nov 27-28 with galleries across town staying open well into the night. Expect a party atmosphere, with special pop-up collaborations and art projects, at the city’s best art spaces: Nov 27 is reserved for galleries along Silom and the Riverside like Whitespace (Saladaeng Soi 1, 081-699-5298) and The Jam Factory (41/1 Charoennakorn Rd., 02-861-0950), while Nov 28 is all about Sukhumvit, including Rebel Art Space (10/5 Sukhumvit Soi 67, 087-112-7774), 100Tonson (100 Soi Tonson, Ploenchit Rd., 02-684-1527) and Numthong Gallery (72/3 Ari Soi 5, 02-617-2794).

5. Winter Means Beer Season

Nothing beats the great outdoors for drinking; and this is the time of year when beer gardens pop up all over town. Head to the city center for The Heineken® Space CentralWorld, an inspiring white space rolling out tasty dishes, extra cold draught beer and live music from big-name bands like Stamp (Dec 3), Lipta (Dec 8) and Musketeers (Dec 22). Elsewhere in the city, Heineken is rolling out four more spots along BTS/MRT lines, including The Esplanade Ratchadapisek (through Dec 31), Parc Paragon at Siam Paragon (Dec 23-Jan 2), Greyhound Cafe at Major Avenue Ratchayothin (Nov 28-Jan 31) and, the newbie, Quartier Garden at The Emquartier (Dec 1-31). Here's a tip: you can now easily book your table online via www.heineken.com/HeinekenSpace#HEINEKENSPACE.
