BANGKOK BAR

Beerosophy 101

The buzz: A brother bar to Beerology, at the Crystal Design Center, Beerosophy is run by a group of friends who wanted to introduce Bangkok to all the beers they have tried and loved on their travels abroad.

The décor: Step inside and you’ll be reminded of a cellar with modern touches; think dimmed orange lights, raw brick walls, contemporary wooden tables and chairs and lots of beer barrels on the wall. Checkerboard tiles and a showpiece bar counter which runs from inside to outside, and displays scores of beer bottles, complete the scene.

The music: A mixture of 90s pop, pop-rock and R&B, with a DJ playing every Friday and Saturday nights.

The crowd: First jobbers and young professionals around the Bangna area, as well as shoppers drawn from Mega Bangna and a small number of foreigners.

The bill: The chef here got his start in San Francisco and calls his menu modern fusion; think Thai meets Western cuisine. Try their ka mhu (pork leg, B330), salmon saeb (smoked salmon in spicy dressing, B220), spaghetti goong siab (spaghetti with spicy dried shrimp, B250) and spicy pork salad (B150). As for the drinks menu, it’s clear they take their beers very seriously with a selection covering over 100 selections of lager, ale, cider, white beer, fruit beer—you name it. Bottles start from B180 and draught beer from B220. Go beyond the Hoegaarden and Stella Artois, and test out the Brothers Cider (B280) making its Bangkok debut. Other worthy brews include the Hobvrau white beer (B220), and their house beer brewed by a craft brewery in Belgium, the Beerosophy 101 (B180).

Why you’ll come back: The wide range of beers served by friendly staff who know their brews (they’re tested on their beer knowledge on a monthly basis) and their generous happy hour deal: buy three full pints get one free from 5pm-10pm. Did we mention the great selection of beers? Nutthachai Bunluthangthum
