Thailand just won its first Cannes Lions Grand Prix award ever, thanks to a campaign about an oddly shaped football field.

The Unusual Football Pitch, a collaboration between property developer AP Thailand and independent digital ad agency CJ Worx, was awarded a Design Lions Grand Prix at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity on Jun 22.

The project began as an initiative to turn abandoned urban spaces into areas that can benefit the local community, resulting in a series of "L" and "Z" shaped football fields in the slums of Khlong Toei district.

The Design Lions reward visual craftsmanship, particularly how design defines a brand or communicates its key messages.

Thai ad agencies consistently take home gold, silver and bronze awards at Cannes Lions but this is the first time the country has claimed a Grand Prix.

The campaign was also named on Time Magazine’s list of “25 Best Inventions of 2016.”
