Bangkok's MRT will operate until 2am on New Year's Eve, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) announced today.

The subway will run from 6am on Dec 31 until 2am on Jan 1, 2018. In addition, 12 station parking lots will have opening hours extended from 1am to 3am on Jan 1.

Acting Governor of the MRTA Rithika Suparat said the extension of operating hours from the usual midnight closing time is part of a plan to provide additional safety and convenience to subway commuters during the New Year holidays.

There were five road accidents in Bangkok on New Year's Eve last year, while Chiang Mai took the trophy at 33, according to www.roadsafetythailand.com.
