Gyms

Everyone’s recipe for staying in shape is a little different. Some like to punch and kick their way to a beach-ready body, others just lift a lot of heavy stuff. There are a surprising amount of options in Rama 4. Like muay Thai? Try Kru Dum Muay Thai (Sukhumvit Soi 36, 02 661 1647. Open daily 10am-7:30pm) which hosts both children's and adults classes each day of the week. There's also BigBox (Rama 4,  83 049 1111. Open Mon-Fri 10am-midnight, Sat-Sun 10am-10pm), which offers trial classes for half the price (B300)—don't worry, the gym has an on-site badminton court if you’re feeling a little posh and don’t like getting punched in the face. Unleash your competitive side at The Training Ground, the area’s only CrossFit gym, or just hit the treadmill and weights at Jatomi, a regular, everyday facility found on the 3/F of Tesco Rama 4, with membership starting at B1,400 per month.

Farmers’ Market

While eating garbage food might feel good in the short term, it’s nice to reward your body with the odd healthy organic vegetable every month or so. The nearby K Village hosts its own farmers market every second weekend of the month (the next event is this December) from 9am-6pm in the center courtyardThere are over 120 booths selling everything from organic food, spa products, homeware, plants and stunning arts and crafts. The event includes a ton of chef demos to help you sharpen your kitchen skills—learn how to make things like sausage and ice cream—or you can take in some art workshops to help find your inner Picasso.

Down-to-earth food

You don’t have to live in Thonglor to fill your belly with quality food. In addition to your standard restaurants like S&P and Zen, Rama 4 is packed with quaint dumpling houses and noodle shops. Try the Taiwanese shabu place FuFu (02-661-5848), the old Sia Guay Tiew Ped duck noodles stand (098-232-9515, 02-671-3279) or munch on some Chinese dumplings from Kiew Muang Jeen (02-249-7795; 092-552-5120).

Art galleries

If you are the kind of person who loves to be involved in your local art scene, Bangkok University Gallery (2-4/F, BU International College Building (Bld.7), Rama 4 Rd., 02 350 3626. Open Tue-Sat 10am-7pm) regularly highlights up-and-coming Thai creatives as well as the odd international artist. If you have some extra cash to burn, meander your way down Sukhumvit 36 to find the tiny, shipping-container-shaped Art Gallery 36 (30, Sukhumvit Soi 36, 086-775-5231. Open Mon-Sat 10am-6pm), which showcases work from well-known Thai artists across a range of styles.

On Nut

Hang out spots

It's hard to think of another area in Bangkok that's exploding with new hang out places like On Nut. The newly opened Habito Mall is packed with cool cafes, cute bakeries, trendy shops and some decent restaurants—you’ll regularly find us at Papa Shabu Farm tucking into its steamy hot pot with premium cuts of pork and beef. Of course, life in On Nut isn’t complete without a few (or at least one) visit to Pyongyang A Ri Rang Restaurant, Bangkok’s only, and quite infamous, North Korean diner (482, On Nut Soi 8, 02-331-1305. Open 11am-10pm). You’ll also end up making a lot of visits to Magpie, found on On Nut Soi 28, which makes the best fruit smoothie in the ‘hood (B120).

No-nonsense food and drinks

On Nut’s The Beacon Place community mall is about to become even more popping with the addition of Sukhumvit Soi 11’s beloved dive bar Cheap Charlie’s opening at the end of November, but there is a lot more here to whet your appetite. On Nut’s only craft beer bar, Bro’s Grill and Beer, offers a generous selection of homebrew mixed with international and Thai favorites—you’ll also find, of all things, Japanese wagyu on the menu. Staying with the Japanese theme, Sendai Ramen Resutoran is the ramen shop of your post-binge-drinking dreams, while Hai Shabu not far away is another late-night, all-you-can-stuff-in-you-belly spot we like.

Co-working spaces

Visiting the Habito mall will be a regular occurrence in your life if you live in On Nut, and the mall’s third floor is home to one of Bangkok’s best co-working spaces—Hubba-To. In addition to its top-of-the-line facilities, like meeting rooms, fixed desks, WiFi and community areas, the facility is also host to a regular line-up of entrepreneur-focused events and courses offered through its Hubba Academy. Have dreams of building Thailand’s next unicorn? This is your place.

Hidden gems

Our favorite being Brownstone Studio, which is hidden behind a car wash deep down On Nut Road. While you do have to venture off the straight-and-narrow to find the place, it’s a journey well worth it. The space plays host to a respectable lineup of both indie and international acts on a regular basis, and includes a tiny attached art gallery featuring Thai artists. Consider this a safe space for your inner hipster.

1395 Sukhumvit Soi 77, 085-483-7675. Open daily midday-2am

Modern shopping options

Let’s be honest, On Nut wasn’t the coolest place in Bangkok just a few years ago, largely because you needed to BTS your way out of there to reach the CBD’s main selling points like Terminal 21 or any one of Central’s mega-malls. Those days should be coming to an end soon with the upcoming Century Mall, which is being built on the land formerly occupied by the On Nut market. The new mall will include designer fashion shops and a state-of-the-art movie cinema.

Where to Live

Sansiri, Thailand’s premier real estate developer, always pushes the boundaries for lifestyle comfort and attainable luxury. It’s two latest properties, in On Nut and Rama 4, showcase its new “Urban Resort Condominium” concept, designed to provide all the comforts of city living while at the same time creating a nature sanctuary to escape the chaos.

Rama 4

Oka HAUS

Retreat and Rebound

Located just a stone’s throw away from Bangkok’s most bustling areas, Oka HAUS lets you enjoy a more passive, slow-paced life in the quiet nooks of Rama 4 while also staying near to the trendy, energy-filled regions of Thonglor. Connected to Sukhumvit and Rama 4 Roads, this new condominium sits just five minutes away from Thong Lo BTS and a plethora of bustling lifestyle centers. Facilities like the Leisure Pool and Sun Set Deck offer a perfect place to unwind or catch striking views of the Bangkok skyline, while the innovative Placespace zone, an educational playground designed in collaboration with Samitivej Hospital, provides an area for children to test their decision making skills in a lush green environment. There is also a one-of-a-kind Star Scene Space on the condo’s roof designed for star gazing when the skies are clear. The building’s location affords easy access outside of the city through the nearby Chalerm Maha Nakhon and Art Narong Expressways giving you ease of travel to any destination. The condominium feels like a resort inside the city, offering a place to relax and take a load off while also recharging your batteries for the days ahead. It’s truly the best of both worlds.
