After weeks of gloom some good news as things gradually improve to the north of Bangkok allowing some of local clubs to return home. Bangkok Glass are finally back in action at their true home the Leo Stadium on Saturday as they entertain BEC Tero Sasana. The Glass Rabbits picked up a decent point at Chiang Rai United last weekend, and Tero scored a late late equalizer to hold Muangthong to a 2-2 draw at home. Neither team has much to play for though the match could be described as ‘the battle for fourth place’ the highest position either side can realistically finish.
TOT are another club going home this weekend and it’s a huge relegation ‘six-pointer’ at the TOT Stadium in Lak Si on Saturday. Victory for TOT (fourth from bottom) over Siracha (third from bottom) would go a long way to ensuring TOT’s stay in the TPL.
Police United host Muangthong, also on Saturday, but they are still in exile. Last weekend they had to play a home match at Suphanburi; this week they’re at Rajamangala Stadium to host the outgoing champions. Muangthong’s diminishing title hopes surely entirely evaporated after that draw at Tero last weekend. They did however record an impressive 6-0 win over Pattaya in midweek to move into the last eight of the FA Cup.
The final game on Saturday is at the IPE Stadium in Chonburi as Army play second-place Chonburi. Home fans are banned from this match because of trouble at an earlier match between Chonburi and Buriram PEA. Army are ten points clear of the relegation zone now and look safe.
On Sunday, Thai Port welcome Chiang Rai United to the PAT Stadium (4pm). Port recorded an excellent 1-0 win away at Sisaket last weekend and are now well and truly safe from relegation. In fact, they are only seven points below fourth. There are no other games involving Bangkok sides on Sunday: TTM host Siam Navy; Khon Kaen are at Pattaya and champions-elect Buriram PEA should all but wrap up the title at home to struggling Samut Songkhram.
Though it may not sound particularly inviting, the big game in TPL Division 1 this weekend is RBAC v Thai Honda (Sat, 15:30). RBAC will breathe new life into their survival hopes if they can claim three points; defeat for Honda would almost certainly end their six-year stay in the top two divisions. The side which spent two seasons in the TPL in the mid-noughties has been completely left behind in this new era of Thai football: no fans, no permanent home stadium; it looks like the end of the TPL road for unloved Honda. Also on Saturday, Bangkok United host Bangkok F.C at the Thai-Japanese Stadium. United’s promotion challenge is a distant memory but F.C really need the points in their battle to beat the drop. And on Sunday, TPL-bound BBCU host Saraburi at the Army Stadium, and Rajpracha play PTT Rayong at Ramkamheng University (15:30). Buriram F.C will be promoted if they win at Suphanburi on Satuday.
