Uber and other taxi apps will meet with the Land Transport Department on Mar 20 to resolve ongoing disputes about their legality, according to Thai PBS.

The news site reports that Land Transport Department chief Sanit Promwong is in favor of providing consumers with more and better public transportation, though makes no mention of whether he directly supports Uber.

Last week, the California-based ride-sharing app called on the public with a petition asking for 30,000 signatures to fight increased regulation on its services.

According to the Motor Vehicles Act B.E.2522 of 1979, in order to operate a taxi, a driver must have a public transport driver’s license and a car registered as a taxi—requirements which few Uber drivers meet.

As of noon today, the petition has far surpassed its target, standing at 41,281 signatures.
