The BMA this week announced a new bike lane with a circumference of 4.2 kilometers, which will also feature a lane designed specifically for adventurous mountain biking, said to be the first of its kind in Bangkok.

Set amid the Makamthet and Sakae Ngam Samduen swamps of the Monkey Cheek flood prevention project, the bike lane, which takes 20-30 minutes to complete, will be opened to commemorate Her Majesty the Queen’s 82nd birthday on Aug 12.

The area surounding the two swamps is open and can be developed for public use and recreational purposes. Thus, the BMA proceeded with the improvement of the area’s landscape and the construction of the bike lanes circling the swamps.

The public park’s bike lane is paved with asphalt, 4.8 meters in width and 4.2 kilometers in length. There are also bathrooms, toilets and dressing rooms on-site.

The Makamthet and Sakae Ngam Samduen swamps altogether cover some 140,000 square meters, and can retain 180,000 cubic meters of water. The project retains water from Hokwa Sai Larng and Saen Sap canals, before releasing it to the public canals helping prevent flooding in Klong Samwa and Nong Chok districts during the rainy season.
