1. Popco (B65)

Popco ranks top when it comes to local popcorn brands. Keeping things affordable, the popcorn has a nice, satisfying caramel flavor and crunch, with just the right amount of fluffiness and a good aroma of butter.
Verdict: Value pick.

2. Nine Popcorn (B150)

This is pretty generic. The texture is an OK mix of fluffy and crispy, while the caramel is not overly sweet, with a slightly salty hint. But the whole thing tastes slightly overcooked, even burnt. Not bad, but not really that good.
Verdict: Could do better.

3. Toro (B18)

One taster remarked that this popcorn looks like someone just peed on it. But, guess what, this supermarket snack is not too bad at all. Caramel flavor? Not really; it’s strangely syrup-y. But it’s pretty nice and will keep you digging into the bag because it’s got a good balance of flavors—not too sweet or too salty.
Verdict: Good sweetness. Nothing more

4. Pop-smile (B45)

This popcorn looks like the bits and pieces you usually find at the bottom of the bag. The corn tastes pretty cheap, too, while the flavor offers only one dimension: super-sweet. Overall, it’s a sad and sweet Taiwanese import.
Verdict: Looks bad, tastes worse.

5. Poppycock (B157)

We were lured in by its shiny bag. But after trying it, one taster said, “It starts weird, and it gets weirder.” Others felt pretty much the same. It doesn’t taste like popcorn; more like glue mixed with sugar—very thick and gloopy, like part-melted sugar at the bottom of your cup of tea.
Verdict: Best left on the shelf.
The Gourmet Market, G/F, Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Rd., 02-690-1234

6. Tob Corn (B99)

Tob Corn really brings out the corn flavor. Sadly, the quality of the popcorn is not that great: too chewy, not really crispy and fluffy, plus a bit stale. The overly brown appearance is also a bit misleading as it has no taste of caramel whatsoever despite the label proclaiming its “Paris Caramel” flavor.
Verdict: Weird, weird color.

7. Garrett (B140)

If you don’t mind the high level of sugar, you’ll love this buzzing brand. Our tasters could pick out Garrett’s unique style with just one bite. As you’d expect, the flavor is rich and caramel-y (make sure you have a glass of water close at hand), while the popcorn is fresh and crispy.
Verdict: They sure know how to make popcorn but you’ll need to toss in other flavors to tone down the sweetness.
