How did Jaidee TV come about?
I’ve had a Youtube account for ages and occasionally I’d make random videos just to entertain myself. Then when I moved to Norway, I found myself struggling, trying to learn the language, so I thought about how foreigners in Thailand must go through the same predicament. That was when I came up with my language-teaching series Learn Thai Bon’s Way. However, after about 15 episodes, I felt a bit antsy and wanted to do something different, for Thai audiences this time. So I made a mockumentary clip on farangs under the name Jaidee TV. It was primarily meant to be shared among a group of my friends back in Thailand, but thanks to Facebook and Twitter, the clip became viral and people actually liked it.
Why did you opt for comedy and satire in particular?
Decent comedy is really lacking in Thailand. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s fed up with aging comedians in drag and all their slapstick antics. There’s already a lot of that on Thai TV so I thought I’d fill the void. Not only does satire make you laugh, it also makes you think.
Do you have a team behind Jaidee TV? And who are they?
Jaidee TV couldn’t have come this far if it was me alone. I have a group of friends who help me with ideas and scripts. The constant updates on the Facebook fanpage are also part of their efforts.
Who are your fans?
The majority of our Facebook fans are Thai, aged 18-34. They’re the kind of people who appreciate Jaidee TV’s comedy and its subtle satire. Some people didn’t understand and took it all a bit too seriously, as with the case of Khun Ploy character, who speaks one word in Thai, another in English.
Which clip received the most feedback so far and why do you think that is?
The first Khun Ploy episode has had over 130,000 views so far, followed by ab-baew, the teenager Cookie. I think the reason the Khun Ploy clip really hits home is that there are a lot of people who talk like her everywhere you look. There’re only two reasons why people like this clip so much: they encounter one on a regular basis or they’re Khun Ploy themselves.
Can we expect any more characters?
Definitely! And Khun Ploy and all the old characters will make a comeback very soon, so please stay tuned.
