Strictly speaking, "enoteca" means "place of wine," and over the years it has come to be understood as a casual wine bar, similar to a Spanish tapas bar or mezze bar in Greece or Turkey. This one is cut from a more traditional cloth, looking authentic enough with a wall of wines on one side of the barnlike room and a bar groaning under the weight of various salumi, cheese wheels and platters of glistening tidbits on the other.
This enoteca (tavern) is cut from a traditional cloth, with its wall of wines and a bar groaning under the weight of various dried meats, cheese wheels and platters of antipasti. It’s a charming little place, especially at night as there are tables set inside overlooking a brightly-lit front yard, through a wall of arched windows. Bold dishes like the risotto with licorice and saffron or oxtail in tomato and red wine sauce with celery and raisin are testament to Enoteca’s ambitions to be more than just another Italian joint in Bangkok.

The buzz: Jarret Wrisley of Soul Food Mahanakorn on Thonglor has teamed up with Chef Paolo Vitaletti to open a trattoria doing “Roman-style family recipes” in a space that used to be occupied by seafood eatery Fat Fish. Expectations are high given the huge popularity of Wrisley’s first venture, while Vitaletti comes with quite a pedigree, too, given his long career at luxury hotels across the globe (Aman, Four Seasons).

The Rama 9 area might have lots of eateries but the trouble is most of them are boring chain restaurants located in malls Central Rama 9 and The Nine. Fortunately, The Hidden Terrace offers something different, a dining experience with real heart and warmth that lets you escape from the shopping center. This all-white restaurant in a beautiful two-story house makes a good first impression, thanks to its delightful, decked garden area filled with retro wooden tables, while inside the small but cozy dining space makes you feel like you are sitting in a friend’s living room.
Recent visitors to the Sala Daeng area might have noticed a tiny shopfront on the corner of Silom Road and Rama 4 that calls itself an “old times pizzeria.” Whether you were intrigued by the small wood-fired brick oven or discouraged by the dubiously low prices, you perhaps didn’t realize the place is actually connected to a much larger, greener, more laidback venue, a few minutes’ drive away. Sat in an open-air thatched hut in the front yard of a stately old home, much of Mama Dolores’ appeal lies in its relaxed atmosphere, but the food is no afterthought.
Located beneath the walkway connecting BTS Asoke, Terminal 21 and MRT Sukhumvit, Pala’s large bay windows offer near-subterranean views. Throw in uncomfortable bar-stool seating, a cramped kitchen-slash-deli packed with cold cuts, a loud crowd of expats and tourists munching on pizza slices under harsh neon lighting and you’ve got a space that practically begs that you order takeaway from their outdoor counter. So why is it always packed? Pala’s pizzas are a play on flavors and textures verging on the sublime.
You know how we feel about chains (Amici belongs to the Pomodoro group), and dining in malls (in this case, Paragon). But Amici’s prices seem to hark from five years ago, the seats next to the glass bay or on the elegant mezzanine feel very un-mall-like and the food packs some nice surprises. To begin with, we’re partial to the dual menus, a concise illustrated catalogue of signature dishes and a fairly brief selection of Italian classics.
