So after a very brief break thanks to the much delayed end to last season, the TPL roars back into town kicking off in earnest this week. Despite plenty of transfer activity and new rules regarding foriegn players its hard to look past Buriram as the title favorites. Still, last year's runners up, Chonburi will take heart from their thrilling penalty win over Newin's northern club in the Kor Royal cup last weekend., while here in Bangkok Muang Thong United will certainly have cause for optimism...
So rather fittingly the season ended with a slightly-damp squib and Buriram winning yet another piece of silverware. Their 2-0 victory over Thai Port in the League Cup Final on Saturday meant they managed an unprecedented treble. It’s an impressive achievement even if much of that success has come courtesy of the very deep pockets of Chairman Newin Chidchob.
Other teams must be looking up at Buriram’s lofty position and wondering how they can get close to them next season....
The final act of the tortuous 2011 season will take place this Saturday when Thai Port take on Buriram PEA in the Toyota League Cup final. The competition started back on May 18th and the semi-finals were played way back in September! The final should have been played on October 15th, but was postponed over flooding fears. It was then continuously pushed back in the schedules as the TPL season became ever more stretched. But finally it is here, and an intriguing contest it promises to be. Not...
A year ago, the big close-season story was the shock departure of head coach René Desaeyere from the Muangthong United hotseat. One year on and it’s the turn of player-coach Robbie Fowler to head for the exit and one final big payday in India. For whereas René was pushed, Fowler has jumped and will make his way to India to take part in the new Premier League Soccer (PLS) tournament – a lucrative six-team event starring aged European players at the wrong end of their...
All matches start at 6pm on Saturday
It’s finally here! The final weekend of the 2011 TPL season. It was way, back on February 12th last year when it got underway. Fifty weeks later and everything’s now decided except for the last relegation place, with one of three teams: Siam Navy, TOT or Samut Songkhram set to fill that place (Sriracha fell through the trapdoor midweek when they drew 1-1 at Muangthong; Khon Kaen are already down).
And you can catch the crucial action as two of...
Just one TPL match this weekend – the penultimate weekend of the 2011 season – but it’s a huge one as TOT host Samut Songkhram at the TOT Stadium in Chaeng Wattana, Lak Si. Both sides are fighting for their TPL lives, and Samut Songkhram for their very existence. A win for TOT wouldn’t guarantee survival, but it would go a long way towards keeping them in the top flight for another season.
A win for Samut Songkhram will ensure they stay up and could prove crucial...
All matches take place on Saturday at 3:30pm unless stated otherwise.
After the excitement of the FA Cup Final in midweek, the 2011 season continues to drag on for the TPL as it rather limps to a conclusion.
On Thursday evening, Police United and Osotspa-Saraburi met for their final game. This dead rubber – played at Police’s temporary home in Suphanburi – had end-of-season bore draw written all over it: so the sides duly served up one of the best matches of the season! Police...
Buriram sealed the double with a well-deserved, but hard fought, win over Muangthong thanks to an extra time goal by Ghanian striker Frank Acheampong. In fact, an enthralling game needed extra time to decide who the watching PM Yingluck Shinawatra would be awarding the cup. That the 90 minutes ended goalless was really down to some great goalkeeping by Muangthong’s Kawin Thammasatchanan and some woeful finishing by both sides.
It was fitting that it was Buriram’s two star performers...
Ahead of tonight's FA Cup Final game between Muangthong United and Buriram (7pm at Supalachasai Stadium), special guest writer Matthew Riley takes a look at how some crazy scheduling has managed to remove the shine from Thailand's premier cup competition.
The English FA Cup has a cache and history no one else can match. Its 140 years of history mean it deserves the reverence it gets. And so to Thailand. The time between FA Cup rounds one and two was nine weeks. Whilst no one could...
So as we predicted it’s going to be a Muangthong v Buriram final in the FA Cup this Wednesday night but the Kirins certainly made heavy weather of getting there. While Buriram cruised to an easy 2-0 win over Army United, courtesy of first half goals from Suchao Nutnum and Frank Acheampong, Muangthong had to rely on penalties to get past Division one side Songkhla FC. The Fighting Bulls prove there’s some truth to their nickname scoring first before Muangthong’s player/...
